EXODUS lesson 1
Are there stories in your life that you prefer not to share? Things, perhaps, that would not shed a good light on either yourself or a loved one? We tend to shy away from such tellings because we believe they will bring about shame, guilt, and judgment. All of these things feel like a sort of death to us. We may even refer to them as our “skeletons in the closet”. Yet when we look at the stories of God’s chosen people, we have the privilege of viewing their “skeletons” because what God is declaring is His own story – the story of how He is all about resurrecting those skeletons into new life. What looks like death to us from His view looks like opportunities for life. And so, the opening stories in the book of Exodus are profoundly vivid stories of “death” – Israel in slavery for 400 years, Moses being hidden in his basket and being taken away from the Hebrew culture, adopted by Egyptian royalty – which God is in the process of turning into life. Let’s see if we can’t begin to view God’s workings in our own life as the real story.
