ZECHARIAH lesson 1
What is the first thing you notice or look for when you enter a grocery store? An unusual number of people have mentioned the lighting; another popular answer was the produce; most of our answers have to do with what I need to make my visit either fast, comfortable, efficient, or productive. When we are on a “mission,” (and isn’t grocery shopping some kind of obligatory mission?), it’s all about us. Every once in a while I can imagine some of my friends (the extroverts) answer “I look for who is in the store…who can I talk to?” But I doubt few of us are on the look out for is a place where we might be of assistance.
There’s a new television show about a hospital that has a new director and he has an idea to change how they do things in this hospital. His key advice to his staff, and his own example, is to ask everyone they encounter, “How can I help?” I think both Zechariah and Malachi would have applauded such an approach. It fundamentally speaks to the loyalty issues that these prophets address. So, it’s time for us to jump in, as we question ourselves: what do my habits say about my loyalties?
