LEVITICUS lesson 0

How could the book of Leviticus possibly have anything to say to us – New Testament believers? Isn’t it just a manual for the sacrificial system of the Old Testament? And aren’t we free from such restrictions? Yes and no. Leviticus certainly is the manual for the priests of the Old Testament, concerning all the intricacies of how to bring the offerings. But if we just step back and look at the original title of this book – Vayikrah – which means “and He called” we just might get the idea that it has something for everyone that God calls, particularly when we understand that the word offering (the most repeated word in Leviticus) means to “come near.”  This is a book about God calling us to come near Him, so that we might become the people He always intended, living in intimate community with Him. It’s about getting used to a new identity, for both the just-barely-former-slaves the Israelites and for us, who certainly still often live  in our old identity of slaves-to-the- transactional-way-of-living. Just maybe God knows what He’s doing by leaving Leviticus in as part of the revelation of His restoring story!
