JOB lesson 0
What subject did you dread or attempt to avoid when you were in school? It seems that no matter the subject, the reason behind our dread is similar–we avoid things that are hard for us. Yet if we had been allowed to avoid a hard subject altogether we may never have learned to read and write or balance a checkbook or use money wisely. Hard things aren’t necessarily bad things, they just require more focused attention. As we begin our study of Job we will be entering, perhaps, a hard subject. Not because Job is about suffering (it isn’t), but because it invites us to dive deeply into examining how we think and what we think about, which isn’t really something encouraged in our culture. But I believe it is an essential subject for us to cover if we are going to be image-bearers with integrity.
