EXODUS lesson 8
Have you ever left an encounter with someone and thought “they were so unfair to me!” And did that unfair dealing make you feel somehow demeaned, devalued? It’s not surprising, since treating one another fairly is in essence a statement that says “you and I are the same, we both have equal value.” The funny thing is, when someone treats us unfairly our typical response is to not just treat them in kind, but to escalate the unfair treatment. Think about the person who purchases a cup of coffee through the drive-through, proceeds to spill it on themselves and ends up getting burned. What’s the response? Sue for a million dollars! Of course, that’s an extreme case. We certainly couldn’t be put in that category. Because if someone forgets to invite us to the neighborhood barbeque we only ignore them for the next three months. Or if a waitress makes a mistake we “forget” to leave a decent tip. Let’s face it, there’s a little bit of vengeance-seeking in all of us. So how does a loving God parent us into a more loving response? We may start to understand as we turn to Exodus 20-24.
