Why is it that all parents round the world teach their children to obey their parents? Is it because they will need to obey their parents for the rest of their lives? Of course not. While the lesson will do them good for the short term, it is really preparing them for a bigger picture of life – one where they will be under someone’s authority and need to know how to cooperate in that realm. It’s a good analogy to what God is doing to the Israelites in giving them the Levitical health laws. Will they (and we) need to make sure we never touch pork? Never eat shellfish? No, in reality He’s preparing them for a bigger picture of life. And that picture is SO MUCH BIGGER than they could have imagined. And I hope our picture of life is ever expanded as we look at what Jesus does for us in this arena.
