JAMES lesson 6

What type of art do you have a hard time appreciating? So many will answer that question with an emphatic “I hate…” But notice the question is about appreciating and not liking. Liking or not liking something refers to your own tastes, but appreciating means you’ve stepped out of your preferences in order to step into another world and try to see it from another’s perspective. It means you understand that art is an expression of a person rather than simply an object to judge.  Learning to appreciate an art form that you’re not fond of means  you want to know what’s behind that expression. Interestingly, these paradigms have much to say about how we often approach people unlike us. And so we jump into the second chapter of James with this in mind.
